Gone fishin’

I love working with my Amish carpenter neighbors… Relentless when it comes to climbing up on steep barn roofs and along rafters to get the job done… But just as quickly swayed by the mid day heat to let work be work and call it a day.

The best thing on a hot summer’s day when work just doesn’t cut it… Grab the fishing pole and some bait and head out to the lake…

Well, I am not big on poking hooks thru worms so I sit on the landing dangling my feet in the water and soaking in the peace and quiet while minnows swarm around my feet beggimg for treats.

And of corse I cannot help myself noticing the beauty of nature all around! From the family of loons enjoying a leisurely swim around the clear lake to hundreds of baby tree frogs bouncing around in the greens to the lush flowers beckoning from the water’s edge to snap some pics…

Yep, it sure beats work!

Winter Blessings

Snow quietly descends from the silver winter sky and powders the world in a delicate layer of shimmery white. I am curled up cozy and warm indoors with a purring kitten in my lap. Enjoying a fresh cup of coffe and fresh chocolate chip waffles, I am looking out, pondering the beauty and quietude of this season in the country.

Rarely a car goes by and besides the milk truck and snow plow rattling along there does not seem to be much astir. Even the blue jays and squirrels have disappeared, crows sit all poufed up and silent in the trees and only tiny tracks tell of rabbits, rats, and mice still bustling about in the snow.

With temperatures well below 0°F there really is little motivation to go outside, and I am grateful that I seized the sunny afternoon yesterday and brought in a barrow-load of fire wood. Though quite a bit colder, the sun and blue sky made it much more bearable to be out and about and I did accomplish quite a bit before the chill got to my bones and enticed me back into my comfortable, well heated abode.

To all of you, whatever your climate may be, I send warm and wonderful wishes for the season and beyond. May the old year end in peace and harmony, and the new one rise and shine with infinite possibilities, prosperity, and above all love, laughter and happiness.

Home Alone for the Holidays

Christmas eve. I am sitting here in an empty house… Just my animals and I. No fancy dinner with lots of people. No laughter, excited voices, clinking glasses, christmas carols and no blinking lights and tinseled christmas tree… No embarrassing family stories, no presents, no regrets.

It may seem sad, to have none of the typical definitions we so readily attribute to the holidays. And yet, all the commercially created festivity aside, in the stillness I am content and I remember the true origin of Christmas.

The birth of Jesus. He had no fancy dinner and no festive christmas decorations. Born in a simple barn with only the animals and his parents sharing a moment of quiet celebration and appreciation.

To me there is no place more perfect to celebrate Christmas and the true gift of love and life and the power of truth within me than the quiet of a manger surrounded only by animals and the presence of spirit. What a blessing to be living on a farm, here and now, and to enjoy a time of solitude and reflection in this still and peaceful winter landscape.
